Basic Requirements
- U.S. citizen
- Valid driver's license
- High school diploma or GED, or 3+ years of active-duty military service with an honorable discharge
- Must pass a background check, interview, medical exam, and Physical Ability Test (PAT)
- Non-smoker at time of appointment and after
- No disqualifying criminal history
Age
- Must be at least 19 years old to sit for the Civil Service exam
- Must be 21 years old to be appointed as a police officer
- No upper age limit — Revere does not enforce the 32-year-old cap some Massachusetts cities use
Residency
- You do not need to live in Revere to apply or take the exam
- Revere residents who've lived in the city for the full 12 months before the exam date receive hiring preference on the eligible list
Massachusetts law (M.G.L. c. 31, §58) prohibits requiring residency to apply — residency only affects your position on the hiring list.
How the Process Works
- Take the Massachusetts Civil Service Police Officer exam
- Your name is placed on the statewide "eligible list"
- When Revere PD is hiring, they request names from that list
- Background check → interview → conditional job offer
- Medical exam + Physical Ability Test (PAT)
- Municipal Police Academy training
